19th August 2018 With the steam ban restrictions now lifted after plenty of rainfall in the past week ex-'SR' Merchant Navy Class 4-6-0 No. 35028 'Clan Line' departs Taunton with the Torbay Express operating as 1Z27 08:00 Bristol Temple Meads to Kingswear via Bath and Westbury on Sunday 19th August 2018. Of note in this image is the incredible height of weeks and undergrowth now growing on the end of the centre platforms at Taunton. This undergrowth has been allowed to grow virtually unchecked since barriers were installed short of the platform ends. 3rd June 2018 SR 'Merchant Navy' Class 4-6-2 No. 35028 'Clan Line' heads the first Torbay Express charter of the 2018 season on Sunday, May 3rd. Having departed Bristol Temple Meads 36 minutes late the 1Z27 08:00 Bristol Temple Meads to Kingswear had regained 30 minutes of lost time upon arrival at Taunton and by Whiteball Summit where we see it here it was running 2 minutes ahead of schedule. 2nd July 2017 Torbay Express passengers were again left without a steam locomotive to haul their train to Kingswear on Sunday 2nd July 2017. Booked LNER A1 Pacific No. 60163 'Tornado' 'Tornado' was not able to operate the train and was replaced by a DB Cargo Class 66 No.66177. 11th September 2016 The final 'Torbay Express' of the season departed Taunton on time at 10:40 on Sunday 11th September 2016. With LNER A1 Pacific No. 60163 'Tornado' at the helm, the popular summer charter train has continued to draw in the crowds both to view the steam locomotive and ride behind it. 4th September 2016 Sunday 4th September 2018 provided a second chance of seeing a steam train passing through the Taunton area. 'The Torbay Express' used LNER A1 Pacific No. 60163 'Tornado' to haul the 1Z27 09:15 Bristol Temple Meads to Kingswear. 24th July 2016 The Torbay Express also differed on Sunday 24th July 2016, after 'Royal Scot' failed its fitness to run exam while on shed at Bristol. With no suitable alternative steam locomotive in place, and no heritage diesels operated by DB Schenker the nearest alternative locomotive was a Class 66. No.66093 was provided for the trip from Bristol Temple Meads to Kingswear and back, taking many of those at the line side by surprise.
