14th January 2018
Freightliner Powerhaul liveried Class 66/5 No. 66528 'Madge Elliot MBE Borders Railway Opening 2015' passes Oath on the 14th January 2018 while working the 6Y15 08:15 Reading West Junction - Fairwater Yard. The locomotive was returning the Network Rail HOBC set to Taunton after overnight ballast cleaning on the Great Western Mainline. On the rear of the set (out of sight) was Class 66 No. 66501 'Japan 2001'.

5th January 2018
Former British Rail 'Laira Blue' Class 50 No. 50008 'Thunderer' passes the western end of Fairwater Yard while operating the 4Z03 08:00 Derby RTC - Okeheampton hauling Network Rail Lorum Rail Grinder DR79501, 02, 03, 04, 05, 06 & 07 for staff training. The Grinder will remain on site at Okehampton for staff training and the Class 50 is booked to return north during Saturday 6th January 2018.

An English Electric Class 50 made a rousing and welcome appearance at Taunton Friday 5th January. 'Laira Blue Class 50 No. 50008 'Thunderer' scatters the pidgeons as it passes through Taunton station working 4Z03 08:00 Derby RTC - Okeheampton with Network Rail Lorum Railgrinder DR79501, 02, 03, 04, 05, 06 & 07 in tow. The ensemble is pictured passing 40 Steps, Taunton heading for Exeter where the locomotive then ran round its consist before heading for Okehampton. The Lorum Grinder will be used for training Netowkr Rail staff on the Okehampton branch. After an overnight stay in Exeter the former British Rail Class 50 is booked to return light engine to Derby on Saturday 6th January.

15th December 2017
Colas Rail Freight provided their two Class 67 locomotives as a substitute for the Network Rail New Measurement Train HST on Friday 15th December, while the HST was out of traffic for maintenance. No. 67023 'Sheila' 'Shelia' and No. 67027 'Charlotte' 'Charlotte' are pictured at Taunton with the 1Z19 18:57 Taunton - London Paddington test train.

The roving Network Rail Class 150 numbered No.950001 paid a visit to Taunton on the 31st October 2017 operating the 2Q08 0453 Bristol Temple Meads - Laira via Merehead Quarry and Taunton. The unit is seen passing through Platform 2 at Taunton.

Former DRS Class 37/6 No. 37611 'Pegasus' is now owned and operated by Europhoenix. The locomotive is often hired by other train operating companies. On the night of the 23rd August 2017 the locomotive was in use with Colas Rail Freight working a Network Rail Test Train. No. 37611 'Pegasus' is pictured in Platform 4, Taunton at 04:00 in the morning, while working the 3Z22 23:26 (Thurs) Bristol High Level to Cardiff Canton via Exeter St Davids.

3rd August 2017
Thursday 3rd August 2017 provided the second heritage Class 37 of the week, passing through the Taunton area. Direct Rail Services Class 37/4 No. 37403 'Isle of Mull' made a very rare appearance hauling inspection saloon 'Caroline' working as the 2Z02 06:45 Willesden Brent to Willesden Brent via Newton Abbot. The locomotive currently carries full BR Large Logo livery and is named 'Isle of Mull' along with the famous 'Highland Terrier' embellishment to the loco side. Many of the Class 37/4 operated by DRS now carry the same former British Rail livery. The locomotive is pictured entering Devon having just exited from Whiteball Tunnel.

Friday 28th July provided the sight of the Network Rail New Measurement Train (NMT) through Taunton 3 times during the day. As part of its UK wide testing diagrams, No. 43062 'John Armitt' and No. 43014 'The Railway Observer' visited Penzance, Paignton, and Bristol from Old Oak Common. No. 43062 'John Armitt' is pictured paused at in Platform 4 at Taunton for a crew change while working the 1Z18 15:46 Paignton – Taunton via Bristol leg of its booked diagram.

Colas Rail Freight recently purchased two Class 67 locomotives from DB Cargo for used on test trains, the pair No. 67027 'Charlotte'+67023 have been painted into Colas Rail Freight colours and named They have also received the names 'Charlotte' and 'Stella'. On the 30th June 2017 the pair stood in for the Network Rail New Measurement Train HST set which was out of service for maintenance. During the 30th June 2017 Class 67's No. 67027 'Charlotte' and No. 67023 'Sheila' visited Penzance, Paignton, and Bristol Temple Meads passing through Taunton 3 times (once to change direction) before returning to London Paddington. No. 67023 'Sheila' 'Stella' leads the 1Z18 15:46 Paignton to Taunton via Bristol Temple Meads seen passing Norton Fitzwarren. Stock for the train was formed of Mk2a No.977969 Staff Coach, Mk2f No.977997 Radio Survey Coach RSC3, MK2f No.72631 Plain Line Pattern Recognition Coach PLPR1 and Mk1 No.975091 overhead line inspection coach.

Colas Rail Freight has returned a large amount of previously preserved locomotives back to the mainline in order to operate many of its Network Rail test train. One such example is split headcode example No. 37099 'Merl Evans 1947-2016' (37324). The locomotive spent many years in preservation at the Gloucestershire and Warwickshire Railway in BR Blue livery wearing its 37324 number, later it moved up to the East Lancashire Railway. During 2016 the locomotive returns to mainline operations with Colas Railfreight and was renumbered back to 37099 'Merl Evans 1947-2016'. On Thursday 18th May 2017 the locomotive is seen passing Taunton while working the 3Z53 07:57 Exeter Riverside - Crewe test train.

13th May 2017
Thought to be the only operational Class 31 on the UK Network No.31452 from DC Rail collected Network Rail's Lorum Rail Grinder from Okehampton on May 13th 2017. Having already worked light engine from Bristol to Okehampton in the morning, the veteran machine is seen passing North Fitzwarren while working the 4Z02 Okehampton to Chaddesden Sidings with DR79401, 402, 403 and 404 in tow.

DC Rail moved a band new Lorum Network Rail, Rail Grinder from Derby to Okehampton on the Friday May 5th 2017. Passing Taunton at around 20:30 the veteran Class 31/4 No.31452 is seen passing Norton Fitzwarren with the new four car grinder heading for the edge of Darmoor.
