Testing of new GWR Hitachi units continues at a pace, nine car Class 802 No.802101 is captured here passing the former station site of Norton Fitzwarren on Friday 13th July 2018 with the 5Z22 09:22 London Paddington to Plymouth. GWR Class 165s began to make their appearance in the South West during W/C 2nd July. It's believed the first Class 165 (in passenger service) to visit Taunton was on Tuesday 3rd July. However this example was captured on Saturday 7th July 2018 having arrived with the 2C83 16:54 Bristol Temple Meads - Taunton service No.165119 is pictured at Taunton. The two-car variant of the Class 166 then worked the return 2U28 18:08 Taunton - Bristol Temple Meads stopping service.

GWR Hitachi IET No.800302 passes Fairwater Yard, Taunton on the approach to Silk Mills whilst working 5Z05 08:26 Stoke Gifford to Goodrington on Wednesday 4th July 2018. The set later returned north at 15:07 returning to Stoke Gifford.

Testing and Driver Training on the new Class 800, and 802 Hitachi IETs is continuing in the South West. Upwards of 6-10 diagrams a day can be viewed at Taunton on some occasions. On Wednesday 4th July 2018 Class 802 No.802001 exits Whiteball Tunnel while working the 5Z87 10:56 Southall - Penzance diagram. The previous trip from Laira had cut short its diagram to London Paddington and so terminated at Southall to return to Penzance. The set later worked back to Laira Depot where it stabled overnight.

Freightliner Class 66s No. 66593 '3MG Mersey Multimodal Gateway' & No.66544 work 6C75 10:40 Fairwater Yard to Bishops Lydeard, with spent ballast being delivered to the West Somerset Railway from ballast renewals on the mainline network with the HOBC. On Wednesday 4th July 2018 6C75 waits at Norton Fitzwarren while on the footbridge beyond a father and young son wait patiently for the Class 66's to cross over onto the West Somerset Railway. Passing by 43027 leads 1A79 as it approaches Taunton with the 06:47 Penzance to London Paddington service partnered with No.43188.

As 1C90 17:03 London Paddington - Penzance joins the mainline from Bristol at Cogload Junction the windscreen needs a heavy dose of detergent to remove the flies building up on the windscreen from the hot summer evening run from London Paddington. Powercar No.43150 leads No.43176 south on Friday 29th June 2018.
