Having been stuck in Devon for most of the day (the snow in Devon having been far worse that in Somerset) Class 66 No.66221 finally headed north during mid afternoon on Sunday 18th March 2018. The locomotive is pictured passing the snowy scenes at Norton Fitzwarren while hauling the 6W97 09:00 Hemerdon - Westbury loaded CWR train running a mere 218 minutes late.

On Sunday 7th January 2018, DB Cargo Class 66 No.66034 makes its way back to Westbury with the 6C22 06:00 Bristol East Junction - Westbury via Fairwater Yard with a train load of spent ballast in various Network Rail JNA/MLA wagons. The location is Oath on the Somerset levels.

7th January 2018
Engineering work in Devon over the weekend of 6th/7th January 2018 produced a number of interesting workings through the Taunton area. On Sunday 7th, DB Cargo Class 66 No.66061 & Colas Rail Freight Class 70 No. 70808 worked in 'top and tail' formation with Colas crew operating as the 6C23 08:24 Exeter St.Davids - Westbury. The location is Oath on the Somerset Levels.

3rd January 2018
DB Cargo operated the first freight train of 2018. Before Christmas DB Cargo stored a rake of wagons at Exeter Riverside for the Christmas period. On January 3rd EWS liveried Class 66 No.66025 was sent light engine from Westbury and haul the rake back to Whatley Quarry where they would return to daily use. The locomotive is pictured climbing to Whiteball Tunnel hauling the 7C28 Exeter Riverside - Whatley Quarry formed of empty aggregate wagons.

19th December 2017
The 19th December 2017 would well count as the wackiest working of the year award. DB Cargo hauled both their RHTT set and their Mendip Aggregate empties back to Westbury on the same train. The working which no doubt came about because of a lack of crew saw the 7C28 13:44 Exeter Riverside to Whatley Quarry formed of work stained Class 66 No.66127 together with DB Red liveried No.66041 hauling two RHTT wagons and a rake of empty aggregate wagons. DB Class 59 No.59201 was attached to the rear having worked the 7C27 Westbury to Exeter Riverside earlier that morning. The ensemble passes Cogload Junction heading for Westbury.

DB Cargo Class 66's No.66127 and No.66027 smoke and spray their way through the village of Creech St Michael on the approaches to Taunton on Saturday 2nd December 2017 working the 3J13 09:07 Westbury - St Blazey via Salisbury.

EWS liveried Class 66 No.66027 leads classmate No.66074 either end of RHTT wagons 642035 642020. The Rail Head Treatment Train set passed Taunton on the 2nd November 2017 working the daily 3J12 01:21 Par to Westbury.

As the annual leaf fall season comes towards its conclusion the filthy job of keeping the rail heads clear of leaf mulch will soon come to and end as well. On the 27th October 2017 Class 66 No.66074 leads classmate No.66027 through Allerford working the 3J13 08:50 Westbury - St Blazey RHTT circuit.

DB Cargo Class 66's No.66027 and No.66074 spent a short period stabled in Platform 1 at Taunton on the 25th October 2017. Having been callled upon to push a stalled heavy freight train up Whiteball Bank the locomotives 3J12 run to Westbury with the Rail Head Treatment Train was cancelled. The pair spent a period in Platform 1 at Taunton prior to dropping back onto their booked return diagram to Par.

Pathfinder Tours operated 'The Torbay and Darmouth Explorer' charter on the 30th September 2017. DB Cargo provided a Class 67 for the tip to Kingswear still wearing tatty EWS livery. No.67030 speeds across the Somerset Levels at Oath with the 1Z27 06:15 Reading to Kingswear.

DB Cargo Class 59/2 No.59202 'Alan Meddows Taylor MD Mendip Rail Ltd' passes Taunton on Thursday 7th September hauling the 6C28 13:45 Exeter Riverside - Westbury empty aggregates wagons having been unloaded at Exeter Riverside Yard. The train passes Platform 4 at Taunton on route back to the Mendips.

The normal nocturnal operation of the 6C99 21:45 Alexandra Dock Junction - St Blazey empty China Clay flow broke cover on Thursday 7th September 2017. The previous nights service had been cancelled due to a lack of train crew. As a result the train was rescheduled to operate during daylight hours. Sporting an impressive 6V99 headcode, DB Cargo Class 66 No.66023 passes Platform 3 at Taunton hauling the 21 wagon consist as the 6V99 08:05 Alexandra Dock Junction to St Blazey.

Torbay Express passengers were again left without a steam locomotive to haul their train to Kingswear on Sunday 2nd July 2017. Booked LNER A1 Pacific No. 60163 'Tornado' 'Tornado' was not able to operate the train and was replaced by a DB Cargo Class 66 No.66177. The unique experimental white roof Class 66 is pictured passing Allerford near Victory Crossing hauling the 1Z27 08:00 Bristol Temple Meads to Kingswear service.

Monday 29th May 2017 saw more LNER action on former GWR territory, when A1 Pacific No. 60163 'Tornado' 'Tornado' hauled 'The Cornishman' from London Paddington to Penzance. The steam locomotive just beat the rain to the area and is seen passing Cogload Junction hauling the 1Z63 08:02 London Paddington to Penzance charter. Tornado will be spending a summer break at the Bodmin and Wenford Railway over the coming week, and the tour was returned to London by DB Cargo diesel locomotive Class 59/2 No.59202 which was equally rare traction for the return trip.

With LNER A1 Pacific No. 60163 'Tornado' 'Tornado' taking a break in Cornwall and staying in the care of the Bodmin and Wenford Railway, DB Cargo provided a Class 59/2 for the return journey to London Paddington from Penzance on the 29th May 2017. These locomotives are more akin to hauling 2000 tonne freight trains to and from the Mendip's, but can put in a good turn on speed when let loose on a railtour. No.59202 'Alan Meadows Taylor - MD Mendip Rail Limited' passes Norton Fitzwarren with the 1Z65 to London Paddington from Penzance.

UK Railtours passed through Taunton on 13th May 2017, hauled by DB Cargo (EWS liveried) Class 67 No.67024. The faded locomotive and coaching stock formed the 1Z14 06:41 Letchworth - Paignton 'The Torbay Flyer' formed of coaching stock 21269 3120 3066 1651 3098 3097 3119 1691 3068 3123 1832 4927 4946. The tour is seen passing 40 Steps, Taunton on route to the Devon Riviera.

With passengers having enjoyed the best the Devon Riviera can offer, UK Railtours whisked passengers back to Letchworth. The faded EWS liveried Class 67 No.67024 speeds the mixed rake of stock through Taunton hauling the 1Z15 17:40 from Paignton to Letchworth on the 13th May 2017.

Having spend the weekend in Cornwall the annual visit of the Bellmond British Pullman was brought to an end on Sunday 7th May 2017 with the two DB Cargo locomotives returning the prestigious dining train to London. Royal Locomotive No.67006 'Royal Sovereign' leads EWS liveried No.67022 north through Taunton working the 1Z33 12:25 Truro to London Victoria through 40 Steps, Taunton.

The special charter season kicked off in style over the weekend of the 6th and 7th April with a weekend of double headed trains entering and exiting the South West. Friday 5th May saw passengers board the Bellmond British Pullman at London Victoria to be whisked into Cornwall for a weekend of opulent travel, dining, activities and accommodation. DB Cargo provided one standard EWS liveried Class 67 and one Royal Class 67 for the weekend trip away. During Saturday the pair provided a day trip to Bath from Penzance before returning passengers to London during Sunday afternoon. On Saturday 6th May 2017, the 1Z80 17:30 Bath Spa to Penzance 'Belmond British Pullman' passes westbound through Cogload Junction double-headed by EWS liveried Class 67 No.67022 & Royal Class 67 No.67006 'Royal Sovereign'.

EWS liveried Class 66/0 No.66034 returned the long welded rail train back to Eastleigh from Cornwall on Sunday 23rd April 2017. The set had worked down to Truro during Saturday evening where it unloaded rails for future replacement. The empty train returned as the 6W98 08:00 Truro - Eastleigh Yard seen here at Marlands on the Sunday morning.

DB Cargo provided a splash of colour on Saturday 22nd April 2017, with newly painted Class 66/0 No.66041 top and tailed with EWS liveried No.66024 while working the 6W11 14:40 Westbury - Bristol East Junction via Fairwater Yard. The trainload of new concrete sleepers are pictured passing Bathpool on the approach to Taunton.

The 6W11 14:40 Westbury - Bristol East Junction engineers train passing through Taunton Station entering Fairwater Yard on the 22nd April 2017. Here the train changed direction with No.66024 to lead the train to Bristol East Junction where it would enter the engineering blockade and eventually be unloaded of its new sleepers.

EWS liveried Class 66 No.66187 stands at Platform 3 Taunton on the 2nd March 2002 having run round it's engineers train. The 8W20 Westbury to Bridgwater needed to change direction at Taunton before heading into an engineering blockade between Bridgwater and Highbridge. The empty wagons are formed ready to receive lifted track panels.
