Freightliner Class 66/5 No. 66528 'Madge Elliot MBE Borders Railway Opening 2015' is pictured at Cogload Junction returning to Taunton with the loaded 6C73 12:12 Westbury - Fairwater Yard HOBC portion conveying freshly loaded ballast.

GWR Class 800 No. 800004 'Isambard Kingdom Brunel / Sir Daniel Gooch' is still involved in the Hitachi Class 800 testing/ training program. On the 11th January 2018 the bi-mode unit made another daytime testing run to Taunton. The Unit is pictured passing Cogload Junction while working the 5Z19 09:20 North Pole IEP - Taunton leg, which arrived into Taunton at 13:25.

DB Cargo bought a splash of red to Taunton on Sunday 7th January 2018. Class 66 No.66192 hauled the 6C97 07:58 Pilning - Westbury continuous long welded rail train (CWR) and is pictured approaching Taunton at Cogload Junction. After reversing direction at Taunton's Fairwater Yard the train returned to Westbury via the Berks & Hants route.

Former Thames Turbo Class 166 No.166208 is pictured at Cogload Junction on Friday 5th January while working the 9C71 10:00 Cardiff Central - Taunton stopping diagram. The introduction of the three car sets on this route has provided a welcome capacity increase on the route. While some services were previously strengthened from two car sets to three and four cars, the constant fixed three car formation of the Class 166 provides a good capacity increase for passengers using the regular services between Taunton, Bristol and Cardiff.

Colas Rail Freight Class 70 No.70816 leads class mate No.70813 in top and tail formation through Cogload Junction on Friday 5th January 2018. The mixed load of NLU/JNA's, MLA's, YWA's, IEA's were running as the 6Z29 10:30 Westbury - St Blazey ready for weekend engineering work. However upon arrival at Exeter Riverside Yard the load was split to form two trains. 20 wagons remained in Exeter Riverside Yard with No.70813 while the remaining 11 continued to St.Blazey hauled by No.70816.

19th December 2017
The 19th December 2017 would well count as the wackiest working of the year award. DB Cargo hauled both their RHTT set and their Mendip Aggregate empties back to Westbury on the same train. The working which no doubt came about because of a lack of crew saw the 7C28 13:44 Exeter Riverside to Whatley Quarry formed of work stained Class 66 No.66127 together with DB Red liveried No.66041 hauling two RHTT wagons and a rake of empty aggregate wagons. DB Class 59 No.59201 was attached to the rear having worked the 7C27 Westbury to Exeter Riverside earlier that morning. The ensemble passes Cogload Junction heading for Westbury.

The latest Great Western HST to go off lease operated on the 1st December 2017. Debranded powercars No.43037 and No.43126 operated the 5Z43 11:42 Laira - St Philips Marsh with set LA01 (42076, 40210, 42033, 42034, 42007, 44011, 41024, 42559, 42035). The set catches the low Winter sunlight passing Cogload Junction.

GWR IEP's No. 800003 'Queen Elizabeth II - Queen Victoria' & No. 800004 'Isambard Kingdom Brunel / Sir Daniel Gooch' have not yet entered passenger service and continue to be used on various testing diagrams. One such test was Sunday 19th November 2017 when the pair operated the 5Z41 10:07 London Paddington - Taunton and 5Z42 14:04 Taunton - London Paddington return service. West Coast Railways operated the 'Dartmouth Royal Regatta Statesman' from Wolverhampton to Kingswear on Saturday 26th August 2017. The high quality dining charter was hauled by Class 57/6 No.57601 with Class 57/3 No.57313 on the rear of the set. The colourful set is seen passing Cogload Junction with the 1Z60 to Kingswear.

Testing of the new IEP fleet continued across the GWR network ahead of their first booked passenger services in October. Bi-modal Class 800 No. 800004 'Isambard Kingdom Brunel / Sir Daniel Gooch' passed Taunton twice on the 26th August 2017. Having worked the 3X01 07:27 London Paddington - Exeter St Davids, the set then returned north through Taunton returning as the 3X02 10:40 Exeter St Davids - Swindon. The set is pictured passing Cogload Junction on its return run to Swindon.

West Coast Railways operated ‘The Royal Duchy' charter from Bristol Temple Meads to Par on Sunday 30th July. In an incredible turn of events the Bristol to Taunton leg was diesel hauled by a single Class 33 locomotive. No. 33207 'Jim Martin' is pictured here passing Cogload Junction before handing over to steam locomotive ‘Royal Scot' at Taunton. The Class 33 spent the day stabled behind Taunton Station before taking over the tour back to Bristol in the evening.

Freightliner 'Powerhaul' liveried Class 66 No. 66528 'Madge Elliot MBE Borders Railway Opening 2015' 'Madge Elliot' operated the 6X04 16:10 Fairwater Yard to Ruscombe on the 15th July 2017. The track relaying train had been formed in Fairwater Yard during the early afternoon ready for its overnight work to relay track. The colourful set is seen passing Charlton (near Cogload Junction) on route north.

GB Railfreight (GBRf) named one of their Class 66/7 locomotives at HMS Drake in Plymouth's Royal Naval Dockyard on the 11th July. The locomotive No. 66775 'HMS Argyll F231' worked south through Taunton on Monday 10th July having been specially prepared for the event. In pouring rain on Tuesday 11th July the locomotive was named 'HMS Argyll' after the same Frigate which was in dock at the time. The locomotive side number was also changed to read F231 carry the same number as HMS Argyll also carries a White Ensign on both cab sides and a cast ships crest on both sides of cab. Class 66/7 No. 66775 'HMS Argyll F231' is seen passing Cogload Junction on Monday 10th July heading for south towards Plymouth.

BR Blue Class 50 No. 50007 'Hercules' 'Hurcules' and Large Logo No. 50049 'Defiance' 'Defiance' haul the pair of visiting Class 20's from the West Somerset Railway back to The Midland Railway centre. The group of colourful locomotives was captured passing Charlton Bridge near Cogload Junction on the 14th June 2017.

Monday 29th May 2017 saw more LNER action on former GWR territory, when A1 Pacific No. 60163 'Tornado' 'Tornado' hauled 'The Cornishman' from London Paddington to Penzance. The steam locomotive just beat the rain to the area and is seen passing Cogload Junction hauling the 1Z63 08:02 London Paddington to Penzance charter. Tornado will be spending a summer break at the Bodmin and Wenford Railway over the coming week, and the tour was returned to London by DB Cargo diesel locomotive Class 59/2 No.59202 which was equally rare traction for the return trip.

Sunday 28th May 2017 saw the first daylight working of the future IEP Class 800. Having already visited Taunton the Class 800 reversed direction and formed the 5X35 19:41 Taunton - Stoke Gifford. Again the unit left well ahead of schedule at 17:42 running 119 minutes early. Class 800 No.800010 is seen returning through Charlton on the approach to Cogload Junction.

Sunday 28th May 2017 saw the first daylight appearance of the future IEP Class 800 to Taunton. Most of the testing of these units has been happening overnight under the cover of darkness, however the 28th May a 5X81 path was added from Southall to Taunton. Having already worked down from Doncaster five car variant Class 800 No.800010 ended up running 110 minutes early. The 5X81 16:45 Southall - Taunton is pictured passing Cogload Junction under moody skies passing at 17:31.

On 26th May 2107, having already traveled to Bristol and back via Westbury along the Berks and Hants route, LNER A2 No. 60103 'Flying Scotsman' 'Flying Scotsman' opens up on the approach to Charlton while working the 1Z42 10:00 Bishops Lydeard - Bishops Lydeard which arrived back to Taunton around 13:30.

The 26th May 2017 was very much the day of Flying Scotsman, with the locomotive booked to make two circular trips from the West Somerset Railway via Bristol, Bath, Westbury and Castle Cary. We have put together a set of superb images charting the two round trips which coincided with some of the hottest and most beautiful weather we've seen in the area for a long while. The first steam of the season arrived into Taunton with LMS power on the front end of the train. The Cathedral Express operated from London Victoria through to Minehead operating as the 1Z60 08:43 London Victoria - Minehead. The train was formed of No. 46100 'Royal Scot' 'Royal Scot' and coaching stock 35451 5249 5200 5171 9104 13440 99352 99347 13320 1666 5236 5237. West Coast Class 47/7 No.47760 was marshaled on the rear end of the train. In good light the consist passes's Cogload Junction on the approach to Taunton on the 20th April 2017

Having been in the country for less than a week. On the 8th April 2017 Colas 'newbies' Class 70 No.70811 and No.70813 teamed up to operate the 6C26 11:23 Hinksey Yard to Bristol East Junction via Taunton loaded with new sleepers. The pair round the classic bend at Cogload Junction nearing Taunton.

With good evening sunlight on the 14th May 2016 we had confirmation that GWR's Heritage HST powercar would be leading a HST set from London, there was only one place to record the nostalgia of the HST in the Taunton area. Intercity 125 liveried powercar No.43002 leads the 1C89 17:00 Paddington - Penzance under the famous flyover at Cogload Junction.

BR Blue Class 46 'Peak' No.46035 passes Cogload Junction light engine on the 15th February 2003. The Peak had previously worked the Crewe - Newton Abott leg of the 'Exe-Taw' charter. At Newton Abbot Great Western 'Castle' No. 5029 'Nunney Castle' took over for the run to Bridgend. The Class 46 worked light engine from as the 0B24 10:10 Newton Abbot - Bridgend ahead of the tour.

Taken on the 2nd March 2002, EWS Class 67 No.67021 hauls the Virgin Trains Cross Country 1M56 08:46 Penzance - Manchester Piccadilly through Cogload Junction. The booked Class 47/8 No.47817 had failed and was replaced by the Class 67 leaving the dead Class 47 on the rear of the train.

British Rail Large Logo Class 50 No. 50006 'Neptune' was an early casualty, many of it's working parts were used to keep other locomotives running when it was finally switched off at Laira. The comparatively new Class 150 'sprinters' had only just arrived in the area in 1988/1989 to replace the aging BR Diesel Multiple Unit fleets. On 1988 Class 150/2 No.150276 passes Cogload Junction heading for Bristol Temple Meads.

In 1989 the transition change from BR Blue and Grey to the first version of Intercity livery was still in full flow, here a cross country service (probably from Plymouth) is seen heading north at Cogload Junction. 253009 was formed of powercars 43019 and 43018.
