Testing and Driver Training on the new Class 800, and 802 Hitachi IETs is continuing in the South West. Upwards of 6-10 diagrams a day can be viewed at Taunton on some occasions. On Wednesday 4th July 2018 Class 802 No.802001 exits Whiteball Tunnel while working the 5Z87 10:56 Southall - Penzance diagram. The previous trip from Laira had cut short its diagram to London Paddington and so terminated at Southall to return to Penzance. The set later worked back to Laira Depot where it stabled overnight.

With the GWR Class 802's not in service yet, testing of the Bi-Mode GWR IET's progressed further during April. On the Thursday 19th April 2018 No.802001 and No.802002 were paired up to operate through to Penzance and back. The pair head up the new order at Marlands exiting Whiteball Tunnel while returning north working the 5Z91 12:17 Penzance - Stoke Gifford testing diagram. The Class 802's operate in much the same way at the Class 800 units, however they are fitted with 940hp engines and larger fuel tanks to help with working over the Devon Banks, so this class will be a more regular sight at Taunton in the future.
