February has been a quiet month of railway activity in the Taunton area. However the 21st February didn't disappoint with a Double Headed DRS movement featuring a rare Class 47 / Class 57 combination. 47712 is seen leading 57009 (itself a former Class 47 No.47079). The pair we working the 5Z50 08:00 Crewe Coal Sidings - Devonport Royal Dockyard conveying two Nuclear Flask wagons and security barrier vehicles. We restart Taunton Trains after an absence of a month, with a look back at some of the workings seen through Taunton in January. The first two months of the year have been relatively quiet. Although weekend engineering work and a couple of Colas Rail movements have provided several traction highlights in the area. A selection of images has been provided below taken during January.
Weekend engineering work will soon take place between Tiverton Parkway and Plymouth meaning the closure of the South West mainline over the next four weekends. Weekend engineering work often brings additional traction to the area normally in the form of Mendip Rail Class 59's. On the 30th January 59202 passes 40 Steps hauling the 6W30 from Totnes to Westbury. (Photo: Steve Yarde)
Freight through Taunton at night can be somewhat sporadic at times. On the 27th Janaury, 66127 is captured at Taunton during a crew change while hauling the lengthy 6C39 from St Blazey to Newport Alexander Dock Junction. This service is rarely seen in daylight, but could provide photographic opportunities in the Summer months. (Photo: Steve Yarde)
Hackney Yard (Newton Abbot) is now set up to receive/ recycle used rail from various track renewal sites around the South West. Regular Saturday and Sunday engineering trains now head to this destination to unload rail. On the 23rd January 66539 passes Creech St Michael with the 6Y27 from Thingley Jn conveying rail to Hackney Yard. (Photo: Steve Yarde)
Less than a mile from the location below, 56312 was captured for a second time in glorious Winter sunshine passing 40 Steps. More recently it would appear a third Class 56 (56303) will soon be joining 56311 and 56312, it's good to see this once popular Class can be kept operational for the mainline network. The next day the pair provided one of the most colorful sights possible on the modern railway. 56312 lead Colas Rail mini HOBC set with 47727 coupled to the rear of the train. The ensemble is seen passing Fairwater Yard on route to the West Ealing Plasser works, where the HOBC would receive some maintenance. (Photo: Kevin Wills). Colas Rail kicked off the New Year in style with a truly outrageous and colorful move on January 19th. Colas use 56312 'Artemis' from British American Railways (BARS), the loco coupled with 47739 'Robin of Templcombe' provided a colorful combination for a light engine move destined for Tavistock Junction. The pair are seen gracing Taunton's centre road during the mid afternoon on the 19th January 2011. (Photo: Paul Finnimore)
