Tuesday 24th January and Freightliner Heavy Haul Class 66/9 No.66953 arrives back to Taunton's Fairwater Yard having return from loading fresh ballast at Westbury on the morning trip working to replenish the current MOBC set based at Taunton. The locomotive passes the still empty Taunton Northern Inner Distribution road which has still not opened, the project of over two years to build a road one mile long continues with another missed opening deadline, gagging orders and legal arguments over costs and mismanagement. In the time its taken to complete this project Devon has build an entire link road from Newton Abbot to Torquay. It's hoped the road may now open some time in February. (Photo: Thomas Courtney)
The use of Class 60's in the South West has always been periodic in recent years so the appearance of DB Cargo Class 60 No.60054 on the Aggregate Industries stone flow for a few days was a rather notable change to the normal traction. The periodic flow of aggregate to Exeter Riverside Yard restarted on Monday 23rd January. DB Cargo at long last have been able to provide their own crew for their own contact. Freightliner Heavy Haul Class 66/6 No.66603 heads west through Taunton with 5 HQA Autoballasters & 6 YDA Octopus Wagons hauling the 6C73 12:12 Westbury to Fairwater Yard on the 18th January 2017 . Colas Rail Freight Class 70 No.70806 passes Cogload Junction on the 17th January 2017 hauling the 6C23 08:45 Westbury - Truro loaded autoballasters. This unique image captured at Cogload from a lofty height was taken not on a camera pole but the ingenious use of a ladder from the adjacent field. The height gained lifts the train from the undergrowth providing a cracking photographic shot. (Photo:S A Ginn)
Taunton was visited by a multitude of engineers train during the 14th/ 15th January with three different operators. EWS liveried, DB Cargo Class 66 No.66107 passes Cogload Junction with the late running 6W01 08:31 Westbury - Bath Spa (via Taunton) engineers. Colas Rail Freight have been operating engineering trains into Cornwall over the 14th/15th January, Class 70/8 No. 70806 leads two sets of Network Rail Autoballasters with Class 66/8 No.66846 tagged on the rear of the train. Network Rail had several engineering blockades in place in the South West over the 14th/15th January. We captured two of the trains involved in delivering engineering materials to these sites. Freightliner Heavy Haul Class 66/5 No.66539 operated the 6Y50 20:31 Westbury - Oldfield Park (via Taunton), followed by DB Cargo Class 66/0 No.66164 hauling the 6W01 19:18 Hinksey Yard - North Somerset Junction (via Taunton). Both trains conveyed a mixture of JNA 'Falcon' wagons, with track panel carriers attached to the back/front of each set. (Video: Brian Garrett)

 

GWR celebrity powercar No.43002 paid a visit to Taunton late on the 14th January. Having spent most of the day as a spare set at Old Oak Common No.43002 lead the 1C27 18:57 London Paddington - Taunton via Bristol. The set arrived into Taunton at 22:00 before then working empty stock back to St Phillips Marsh Depot. From time to time Network Rail Class 97/'s (Class 37) stray from their normal operational patch. On the 11th January those who were up at 05:30 in the morning would of witnessed No.97304 at Taunton working Network Rail test train UTU1. The Class 97 operated the 3Z22 2325(Tue) Bristol High Level Sdg - Cardiff Canton Pullman Rail via Exeter. It's been some time since regular flows of spent ballast have been unloaded at Norton Fitzwarren, the movements only normally happen when Network Rail have one of their HOBC sets operating from Fairwater Yard. On the 10th January Freightliner Heavy Haul Class 66/9 No.66953 leads the 12:40 Bishops Lydeard to Fairwater Yard train through Norton Fitzwarren with No.66520 attached to the rear of the set. Happy New Year to all our viewers, over the Christmas period we have been working hard on a brand new pictorial page featuring bygone steam images from Taunton. A recent discovery of images being sold from a house clearance has provided an amazing collection of images from the 1930's, 40's and 50's taken in the Taunton area. Many of the images have required hours of work to repair and restore to a viewable standard. The Christmas break has provided the opportunity to build a brand new gallery to host these images for the future generations to enjoy. We hope you enjoy a look back into the past.
