JUNE 2014 NEWS :

For those regular readers of Taunton Trains you will be aware of our 83B Weebly website, which is used to host additional images from the Taunton area. For some time now it's become full up with images not related to the Taunton. So in order to provide a clear divide the 83B Website image hosing site is currently being revamped. Various galleries have already disapeared from the site. But don't worry they are not lost. Instead all non Taunton related images will now be hosted on www.bgphotographic.weebly.com (a new site which has been lauched this week). 83B on the other hand will be revamped (as time permits) over the coming weeks and will start to grow with more interesting images and articles.
A Mendip Rail Class 59 ambled down to Devon on the 30th June hauling the 7C27 Westbury - Exeter Riverside loaded stone, the locomotive No.59103 'Village of Mells' is pictured at Nynehead on its return journey to Westbury with its rake of empty MBA box wagons in tow. (Photo: Wayne Potter)
Genuine Western Region power returned to the South West on the 28th June with Class 52 Western No.D1015 'Western Champion' heading Pathfinder Railtours 'Mazey Day Cornishman' from Tame Bridge Parkway to Penzance. The locomotive is pictured passing the former Silk Mills Crossing while on route to Penzance. (Photo: Phil Izzard)
Steam power returned to Taunton on the 29th July hauling The Railway Touring Companies' 'The Royal Duchy' charter from Bristol Temple Meads to Par. After last minute changes were made to the schedule, LMS Black 5 No.45407 was permitted to travel through to Par and be turned on the St Blazey Turntable (which had been made serviceable after an agreement between DBS and West Coast Railways). The long term future of the St Blazey turntable is in major doubt but we hope for the sake of future steam hauled railtours in the South West, that the St Blazey turntable can be saved as a strategic location in Cornwall it's a vital piece of equipment to prevent locos having to turn in Plymouth and run tender first into Cornwall. No.45407 is seen taking Whiteball Bank with ease on route into Devon and Cornwall. (Photo: Adam Snow)
Cross Country Trains were forced to hire in a HST set from East Coast on Sunday 29th after one of their own sets was presumably out of service after being striking a person on the track on Saturday afternoon. 43207 + XC02 + 43301 1V52 06:01 Glasgow to Paignton was the set and service involved in the incident. Here 43296 and 43309 from East Coast are seen passing Bathpool with the 1V50 09:00 Leeds - Plymouth service, they later returned North with the 1E73 16:25 Plymouth - Leeds service. (Photo: Adam Snow)
First Great Western's latest power car offering is one of the best produced so far, with a full sized 'Visit Plymouth' advert along the body side of power car No.43163, cutting the advert short of the cab certainly makes sense based on the previous HP power car's. 43163 is seen on its first outing on the 26th June 2014 in its new colourful guise, oddly working the 1A12 07:40 from Paignton to London Paddington at Cogload Junction. Freightliner Heavy Haul continue to operate the Network Rail HOBC contract from Fairwater Yard, although the external appearance of the company 'brand' continues to deteriorate, with many of the class now suffering from 'window weeping' from rusting around the locomotive cab window frames. Class 66/5 No.66560 passes Cogload Junction on the 26th June with the 6C72 Fairwater Yard - Westbury HOBC portion. (Photo: Adam Snow)
Having taken a recent starting role in the West Somerset Railway's Mixed Traffic Weekend, some of the DEPG diesels also get to operate on scheduled passenger services during the summer period. On the 21st June is was the turn of BR Green Class 35 Hymek No.D7017 to operate the diesel diagram. It's seen here at Watersmeet with a Minehead - Bishops Lydeard service. The 27th June will see Class 47 No.47840 in action on the WSR service, see further details at the bottom of this page. (Photo: Cameron Walker)
The Network Rail NMT visits most parts of the UK railway network each week, many passengers have no idea how significant this piece of equipment is or the technology which it houses. On the 20th June 2014, 43062 and 43014 head north in good sunlight at Cogload Junction with the 10:01 Plymouth - Paddington recording run. 43014 has recently been named 'The Railway Observer' while 43062 continues to carry its 'John Armitt' plates. This image taken on the 16th June records one of the many Network Rail tampers which traverse the UK railway network each week day. DR 73111 (a Plasser & Theurer 09-3X-D-RT Tamper/Liner/DTS) owned by Network Rail is pictured running operating from Fairwater Yard to Andover, taken near Cogload Junction. (Photo: Chey Farzaneh)
BR Class 52 Western No.D1015 'Western Champion' departed from its time on the West Somerset Railway on the 16th June heading back to Tyseley. The locomotive operated light engine from Bishops Lydeard passing Taunton at 08:50. (Photo: Jeff Treece)
Saturday 14th June saw GWR Castle No.5043 'Earl of Mount Edgcumbe' operate 'The Whistling Ghost' charter from Tyseley to Minehead. The locomotive also conveyed it's additional water tender within the train consist. 5043 is pictured passing Banklands with the 1Z34 charter near Cogload Junction nearing Taunton. (Photo: Bob Tucker)
13th June saw DRS Class 37's visit Taunton on the Network Rail track inspection / plain line pattern recognition train. Class 37/6 No.37607 and 37610 are pictured at Taunton with the 1Z03 03:43 Plymouth to Barton Hill. (Photo: Nathan Williamson)
Colas Rail Freight continue to provide services in and out of Taunton on a regular basis, on the 12th June 2014, Class 66/8 No.66850 made a rare appearance while working the 6Z27 from Plassuer Works to Fairwarter Yard with three refurbished wagons for the Network Rail HOBC set. The West Somerset Railway held their annual 'Mixed Traffic Gala' on the 6th 7th and 8th June. The line provided a feast of Hydraulic Traction for enthusiasts to enjoy, while many images were recorded over the gala period we will just display this single image of D821 'Greyhound' on the turntable at Minehead. (Photo: Wayne Potter)

Included above are a slection of images taken during the West Somerset Railway 'Mixed Traction Gala' taken on between the 6th & 8th June. The event featured a fleet of western reigon hydraulic locomotives including visiting locomotives D1015 'Western Champion' and D821 'Greyhound'. The event featured many authentic services, headcodes and double headed pairings. (All Photos: Cameron Walker)

2014 WSR Diesel Haulage:

The 2014 season will again see the DEPG Diesel Fleet working Friday and Saturday passenger services during the peak holiday season in July and August. A one Day Rover ticket on the WSR costs £17.00 (which has been frozen at the 2012/2013 price) but if you book in advance you can get this ticket for £15.30.

The 2014 Diesel Diagram has been altered by the WSR, which means you must now check the 'Yellow' or 'Green' timetable for your day of travel, and there is no longer two return trips provided 'back to back'. Lengthy breaks in the Diesel service at Minehead means the Diesel's see a vastly reduced daily diagram compared to previous years!!
