Wednesday 20th February saw two veteran Class 31 locomotives (dating from 1959) stabled in Platform 1 for the night. DCR sent No.31190 to Meldon Quarry to collect classmate No.31452 before recessing at Taunton overnight. 31452 and 47375 were used by the Dartmoor Railway during Christmas 2012 to haul Polar Express charters on the line. Initial thoughts were that 47375 would also be returning with these locomotives, but it appears to have stayed on the line, further fueling ongoing rumours surrounding the future use of 47701 'Waverley' which has been out of use at Dartmoor for some time. Both 31190 and 31452 are due to leave Taunton on the 21st. (Photo: Brian Garrett)

Also passing Taunton on the 20th February was Colas Rail Freight's re timed 6Z52 Gloucester Yard - Teigngrace empty logs. The service was originally booked to operate during daylight hours, but problems occurred with the locomotives. The service was eventually re timed and left Gloucester Yard with No.56094 providing power. The locomotive is seen passing through Taunton Station on route to Newton Abbot. (Video: Brian Garrett)

With many of DB Schenker's Class 60's now being put through a mid life overhaul program at Toton its pleasing to see these British built machines finally regaining strength in numbers. Visits to the Taunton area are still sparse, but on the 9th/10th February DB Schenker liveried Class 60 No.60010 operated into Devon on an overnight engineers. The loco made its first visit to Taunton in over 5 years and is seen passing 40 Steps returning the 6W97 08:45 Totnes - Bescot fully loaded welded rail train.
