Colas Rail Freight provided another Class 56 to enjoy during the festive period on the 17th December. No.56113 operated light engine from Westbury to Hackney Yard (Newton Abbot) in order to collect the long welded rail train from the yard. Regular travelers to Taunton station will have noticed a large Colas liveried crane stabled in the new sidings. Over the last several weekends there have been PW trains dropping off parts of new points, currently spread all over the area where Forty Steps bridge once stood. It is conceivable that the Colas crane will be used to lift the new points into position over the festive period. The crane is numbered ZOA DRK 81612 and is one of the largest railed cranes on the UK network. Built in 2005 by Kirow, the crane is capable of lifting 125 tonnes. (Photo: Nathan Wiliamson)
Having spent the weekend stabled at Taunton, DCR's Class 31 No.31190 made a rare foray into into Cornwall on the 9th December to collect the Network Rail 'Swedish Rail Vac' from Par. The loco then returned the mobile industrial hoover from Par to Eastleigh, despite running nearly 90 minutes early the loco was held in Tiverton Loop until its booked departure time. Freightliners Class 66/9 No.66951 became the first locomotive to work over the newly revised/ connected head shunt from Fairwater Yard on the 7th December. Overnight engineering work saw the final section of track installed to reroute the head shunt to allow for the former head shunt to become part of the Taunton NIDR link road between Station Approach and Staplegrove. DCR Class 31 No.31190 was stabled in Taunton over the weekend of the 7th & 8th. The loco was booked to work into Cornwall on Monday 9th December to collect the Network Rail 'Rail Vac' which has been carrying out ballast and drainage works in the county. DB Schneker provided the sight of a Class 59/2 Taunton on Friday 6th December. No.59201 is pictured passing Charlton with the 6C28 Exeter Riverside-Westbury stone empties. The coming weeks are perhaps one of the last opportunities to capture some of the remaining autumn colours which have stayed on some of the trees despite the recent windy weather. Direct Rail Services and the Northern VSOE paid an impromptu visit to the South West on the 4th December. The Northern VSOE visited Newton Abbot as part of an afternoon 'Luncheon' service from Cardiff. The prestigious train was top and tailed by Class 47/8's. No.47813 'Solent' is seen leading the 1Z69 15:08 Newton Abbot - Cardiff over Whiteball with No.47832 'Solway Princess' attached to the rear of the set.
